Learning Ableton Live – eight class course - 90 min per class - ALL COURSE NOTES AND USB DRIVE PROVIDED -

brief outline of what you will learn:

Class one – Audio clip session view and arrangement view

  • Clips are the foundation on how live can take audio files and create looped segments in order to create ideas for a track. Same applies to MIDI clips.
  • The session is a key window in Ableton in order where clips can be recorded and looped back.
  • The management view is where clips and ideas can be arranged in a horizontal time line where the music plays back over bars and beats.

    Class two – Managing files for projects

  • In order to know where all projects are stored in Ableton and be able to organize projects and files that are used through out the live sets.

    Class three – Understanding scenes, loops and clips

  • Scenes are key when arranging loops in session view in order to put musical clips together such as verse, chorus, intro etc..

    Class four – Locking tempo and time warping

  • Working with tempo and warping music is key when arranging music that have different time tempos in order to have them work together

    Class five – Using instruments, Vst's, recording in session view and arrangement view

  • In order to be able to use instruments that are software based and record them into session view and arrangement view the student needs to know the instruments available in Ableton and third party instruments & VSTs.

    Class six – Midi mapping, automation and working with effects

  • MIDI mapping will allow Ableton to work with external gear and controllers in order to have a more hands on approach.
  • Automation allows you to apply expressive gestures for added variation and mix control through out a working project.
  • Effects will give more colour and atmosphere to a mix which adds a good sense of ambiance and dynamics.

    Class seven – Cueing your tracks for performances, live and in studio

  • Cueing in Live will help artists and performers to reference and collaborate their ideas and ones already recorded.

    Class eight – Using live as an instrument for performances

  • Live comes with great tools and a layout that works great in a live performance situation and can integrate with many types of MIDI controllers for live performances.
